In late 19th-century England, sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood lose Norland, their long-time home in Sussex, after their father passes away and the entire inheritance goes to John, the son from his first marriage. Along with their young sister Margaret and mother Mrs. Dashwood, they relocate to a cottage in Devonshire provided by Sir John Middleton. There, an affection begins to blossom between Elinor and Edward, Fanny's reserved brother. The monotonous country life drives the bustling Sir John and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Jennings, to immerse themselves even further in matchmaking, with their first target being Marianne and Colonel Brandon. However, after spraining her ankle during a walk, Marianne is rescued by the dashing John Willoughby and falls passionately in love with him.
