소련에서 미국으로 망명하여 세계적인 대스타가 된 발레리노 니콜라이(미하일 바리시니코프)는 도쿄 공 연을 위해 비행기를 타고 이동하던 중, 시베리아 상공 에서 기체 고장으로 소련 영토에 불시착하게 된다. KGB에 의해 구금된 니콜라이는 흑인 탭댄서 레이먼 드와 함께 목숨을 걸고 미국 대사관으로의 탈출을 계획한다. 주인공 니콜라이를 연기한 미하일 바리시니코프는 실제로 소련 키로프 발레단에서 활동하다가 1974년 서방으로 망명한 세계 최정상급의 실제 발레리노였 다. 자신의 실제 삶이 투영된 이 작품에서 그는 대역 없이 경이로운 무용 실력을 스크린에 고스란히 선보 였으며 헐리우드 전설의 탭댄서 그레고리 하인즈가 한 스크린에서 만나는 장면은 그 자체로 종합예술로 평가받으며 영화속에서 수많은 명장면을 만나 볼 수 있다. 

Nikolai (played by Mikhail Baryshnikov), a world-renowned ballerino who defected from the Soviet Union to the United States, makes an emergency landing in Soviet territory due to a mechanical failure over Siberia while flying to Tokyo for a performance. Detained by the KGB, Nikolai plans a life-threatening escape to the US Embassy alongside Raymond, a Black tap dancer. Mikhail Baryshnikov, who portrayed the protagonist Nikolai, was actually a world-class ballerino who defected to the West in 1974 after performing with the Soviet Kirov Ballet. In this semi-autobiographical work, he showcased his extraordinary dance skills on screen without any body doubles. The scene where he meets Hollywood's legendary tap dancer Gregory Hines on the same screen is celebrated as a comprehensive masterpiece of art, featuring numerous iconic moments throughout the film.
