영화 역사상 가장 가슴 아픈 전쟁 실화이자 걸작영화. 1970년대 캄보디아 내전 당시 크메르 루즈 정권이 저 지른 대학살의 참상을 뉴욕타임즈 기자 시드니 쉔버 그와 통역관 겸 기자인 디스 프란의 우정을 통해 그려 내었다. 1975년, 크메르루즈군이 프놈펜을 점령하자 외국인 들은 피신하게 되고, 프란의 가족들을 피신시키는데 성공하지만 프란은 붙잡혀 강제수용소로 끌려가게 된다. 미국으로 돌아와 퓰리처상을 받은 시드니는 프란에 대한 죄책감에 그의 행방을 백방으로 찾는데 프란은 크메르 루즈의 광기속에서 글을 모르는 농부 인 척 연기하며 극적으로 탈출을 시도한다. 주인공 프란을 연기한 행 s. 옹오르는 배우가 아닌 실 제 캄보디아 출신 의사였으며 실제로 크메르 루즈 정 권의 수용소 생활을 견뎌낸 생존자였다. 또한 그는 아 시아계 남성 최초로 아카데미 남우조연상을 수상하 는 역사적인 기록을 남겼다. 영화는 이념이라는 미명 아래 인간이 어디까지 잔인 해질 수 있는지, 그리고 전쟁이 평범한 인간의 삶을 어떻게 파괴하는지 스크린에 고스란히 담아냈다. 해골과 시체가 뒹구는 늪을 통과하는 디스 프란의 탈 출 시퀀스는 영화 역사상 가장 충격적이고 사실적인 전쟁 고발 장면 중 하나로 꼽히고 있다.
제57회 아카데미 시상식에서 남우조연상, 촬영상, 편집상 등 3개 부문을 휩쓸었으며, 영국 아카데미(BAFTA) 시상식에서도 작품상을 포함한 8개 부문을 석권하였다.
This masterpiece is one of the most heartbreaking war films in cinematic history, based on a true story. It vividly portrays the atrocities of the mass genocide (the Killing Fields) committed by the Khmer Rouge regime during the 1970s Cambodian Civil War through the lens of a profound friendship between New York Times journalist Sydney Schanberg and Dith Pran, a local Cambodian journalist and interpreter.
In 1975, when the Khmer Rouge forces capture Phnom Penh, foreigners are evacuated. Although Sydney successfully helps Pran's family escape to the United States, Pran himself is captured and sent to a forced labor camp. Returning to America and receiving the Pulitzer Prize, Sydney is consumed by guilt over leaving Pran behind and desperately searches for his whereabouts. Meanwhile, amidst the sheer madness of the Khmer Rouge, Pran attempts a dramatic escape by pretending to be an illiterate peasant.
[Cinematic Significance]Haing S. Ngor, who portrayed the protagonist Pran, was not a professional actor but a real-life doctor from Cambodia. He was an actual survivor who endured the brutal forced labor camps and lost his entire family under the Khmer Rouge regime. Pouring his own tragic experiences into his performance, he made history by becoming the first Asian male to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
The film serves as a stark indictment, capturing on screen the chilling depths of human cruelty committed in the name of ideology and how war ruthlessly destroys ordinary lives. In particular, Dith Pran’s escape sequence—wading through a swamp littered with skulls and decaying corpses—remains one of the most shocking and realistic anti-war scenes in film history.
